CONTAINED: ARTIST INTERVIEW -
K CHARMS

WE SPOKE WITH LONDON BASED WORDSMITH K CHARMS AS HE REFLECTS ON LIVE SHOWS, FAVOURITE VISUAL + CAREER OBSTACLES.

“I think sitting there everyday writing and being vulnerable about myself about things I’ve never spoken about before is what inspires me, but it can be quite scary at the same time. You can write some of these songs and put them out but you can’t control the narrative and how it makes people feel”

We know you recently completed your first performance, can you tell us how it went?

Yeah man, I recently did a show at Shoreditch Boxpark and in Brixton two days apart. It was a great experience man, it was good to get feedback from people, I couldn’t ask for much more from these early stages -  think it’s important I get the right feedback from the right crowds. You know with more experience means more mastering the art of performance. I threw myself in the deep end and I like to think I handled it quite well, the people where loving it too - onto the next one.

If you had to choose one festival to headline, which one would that be and why?

Coachella! That would be great because of the type of artists that have been on there previously, I’d like to see my name on those lists. The type of crowds and reception a show like that gets from the festival, that’s where I belong.

Wearing CLINTS, SKITZO, YEEZY

What’s your favourite music video of all time?

That’s a good question it’s actually, a music video by J Cole and Jay Rock called the OSOM ‘Out of sight out of mind’. It follows a story, a very interesting story you should go watch it. It’s a real authentic story line and the way they lyrically narrate the video is crazy.

Name a producer do you dream of collaborating with?

Timberland or Pharrell, I love the movement of their beats. You know they would come to me with a tailored made product and it would just sound perfect.

What do you think is the biggest obstacle you’ve had to get around?

That’s a tough one. For me it was probably mastering my craft and I’m still going through that and I will still continue to go through that, throughout my career. I think sitting there everyday writing and being vulnerable about myself about things I’ve never spoken about before is what inspires me, but it can be quite scary at the same time. You can write some of these songs and put them out but you can’t control the narrative and how it makes people feel. So that definitely is something I’ve had to overcome, being brave and over bearing my songs.

What’s your favourite album of 2022?

Probably Little Simz ‘Sometimes I might be an introvert’. I think from top to bottom it’s the most cohesive project. It has substance and replay value, I think she really pushed the boundaries in this country. Simz Really hit the nail on the head with this one, you know instrumental wise, song writing wise, everything man it’s the one I still listen to now.

What’s your favourite from your forthcoming EP + what does it mean to you?

So, I’ve got a song on my EP coming out called ‘Norine’ it’s actually written about my Nana and it’s very heavily emotionally you know, I’m talking about a lot of stuff I experienced in the last 2 years. I’m talking about growing up and visiting my Nana’s every weekend and what that taught me about being around my family.

What does your music represent?

My music represents passion, desire, hope, meaning. Every time I sit down to write a song it isn’t really about me as such. It’s about who I can impact and what it’s going to mean to someone else. So you know I like to bare all on the page because I know there’s kids out there who are going to come across my music, even a few years down the line. They will be inspired I know it.

What are we expected to see in the next 12 months?

I mean over the next 12 months I’m planning on releasing a project, can’t give you the name yet just know it’s filled with lyrics, movement and feeling. I’m going to be doing more shows, you can catch me maybe in Manny, London even other places, let’s see how the next few months go. You can just expect greatness over the next twelve months, that’s what I plan on delivering.
